Ten points of attention for proper maintenance of bearings

1. Correct handling and storage

To prevent contaminants, including moisture, dust or dirt, from entering the bearing, the bearing should be handled and stored properly. First of all, the bearing should be placed horizontally in a clean, dry and room temperature environment under the original packaging. Do not store chemical products in the same warehouse, and the relative humidity of the warehouse should not exceed 65%. Bearings cannot be stored on the ground. Remove the package before installation and use, otherwise the bearing may be exposed to corrosion or pollutants. Bearings are precision parts and should be handled carefully to avoid bumping, component dropping, etc., which may cause premature bearing failure.

2. Use professional tools for installation and disassembly, and use appropriate equipment for handling bearings

In order to ensure uniform force during bearing installation and removal, special tools, such as bearing puller or induction heater, are required. Please refer to the instructions and precautions for the use of special tools. If it is necessary to use the heater to install the bearing, the temperature should be strictly controlled below 120 ℃; the use method and precautions should be clarified when using the puller during disassembly.

3. Before installing the bearing, carefully check the physical condition of the shaft or bearing seat

Be familiar with the correct installation method. Use a soft cloth to wipe the surface before installation (the wiping cloth cannot be replaced by old cotton silk, etc.).

4. Correct installation

When installing bearings, the correct method should be used, which depends on the type of bearing and the type of fit. The radial ball bearing ring can be installed in a variety of ways, from clearance fit to interference fit, depending on the type of load, speed and vibration level. The position of applying pressure during installation must be correct, otherwise it may cause damage to the rolling element.

5. Correct lubrication

One of the main causes of bearing failure is lubrication. This includes using the incorrect lubricant, as well as using too much or too little lubricant. Environmental conditions, temperature, speed and load conditions need to be considered to select the correct lubricant, filling quantity and lubrication method.

6. Avoid using temperature out of range

The working temperature of the bearing should be within the design limit temperature range, otherwise working for a long time will lead to a decrease in the carrying capacity and early failure of the bearing. In addition, during regular maintenance, it is necessary to pay attention to the discoloration of the ferrule, rolling body and cage, because this may indicate overheating, which may be caused by excessive operating temperature or improper lubrication, and must be paid attention.

7. Avoid corrosion as much as possible

Bearing corrosion is a common form of damage, bearings exposed to wet environment, may lead to moisture intrusion, causing bearing corrosion, and eventually lead to premature failure of the bearing. In the specific application for corrosive environment, select the appropriate bearing is the key, need to choose different materials and sealing form of bearing design.

8. Choose Alternatives Carefully

If the bearing does reach the end of its service life, replace it with a bearing with the same or higher quality as the original bearing. In the long run, lower quality substitutes may lead to greater losses.

9. Monitoring

Bearings rarely fail without any warning signs. Excessive noise, vibration, and temperature rise may be signs of deeper problems. If any abnormal operation of the bearing occurs, it should be monitored more closely and the cause should be found.

10. Seek professional help

Bearing professionals can provide better maintenance methods and advice for your specific application and can help you diagnose bearing problems. If in doubt, you can seek professional help.
